As we stepped into the 'Web 2.0 era', we share more and more personal information online. Photographs are a big part of it. So how to protect our images and brag about them at the same time? (This tip is useful for anyone who pose pictures on websites!)
Generally there are three kinds of protections one can take:
1. Disabling right-click download function on your website
2. Copyright information on your webpages
3. Watermarks on your photographs
Now let's take a closer look at each option.
Option 1 and 2 are generally used on websites.
Option 1 will effectively stop anyone from downloading your images, since the right-click download function will not work. In a perfect world, this would have been sufficient. But unfortunately that is not the case. This is where your copyright information come to help.
Option 2 and 3 and similar, but watermarks offer more direct protection, since the pictures are basically rendered useless to the 'illegal borrowers'. The disadvantage of a big watermark is that it obstruct the image. (Unless that is what you try to achieve.) So a lot of people choose to have watermarks in the bottom of the images.
While options 1 and 2 are more for website protection, everyone can use a little watermark on your images. And there is a good reason to it. When we share images on Facebook, Wechat or any other similar social networking services, our images are NOT protected. Have you noticed how easy it is to save someone else's pictures? Simply just right click. Have you realized that others may save your images just as easily? In this situation, the best way to protect your images is to add a little watermarks. And it is not difficult. Even free image editing software like Picasa can do it for you.
To happy and safe sharing!
